Comal County Genealogy Society Scholarship

The Comal County Genealogy Society is offering a new $1000 scholarship in 2025. The scholarship is open to 12th graders attending any public or private high school in Comal County (including all of Comal ISD and New Braunfels ISD, regardless of the school’s location) with plans to attend a Higher Education institution after graduation.

The application is a small genealogy project consisting of a 4 generation Ancestry/Pedigree chart, and providing a picture and description of a treasured object (family photo, document, or heirloom) that is important to the applicant.

Submission Deadline is 10 March 2025 and will be awarded in April 2025.

Genealogy Classes

The Sophienburg Museum and West Side Community Center have partnered up to sponsor a series of FREE genealogy class. These classes are given by Carlos Casteneda.

Saturday, Sep 21, 2024 10:00am to 12:00pm – Genealogy DNA: How to use it, and what to do with the results. Carlos Casteneda will use his personal family research and DNA results as an example.

RSVPs will be taken at the Sophienburg Museum (830.629.1572) beginning Tuesday, August 12th, as well as during the Fiesta Patria event on September 7th.

Carlos Casteneda is a native of New Braunfels. He is a member of Los Bexarenos (Hispanic genealogy society in San Antonio) and has done extensive research on his family using documents from Mexico and Spain. He volunteers in their library which contains records going back to the 1700s and knows of other resources available to people in the San Antonio area. He also does research for individuals.

Fiesta Patria: Los Fotos de Ayer

Sponsored by the Sophienburg Museum and Archives, this is a community celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month featuring photos from the Seidel Studio Collection spanning from the 1920s-1960s.

Date/Time: September 7th, 2024 10:00am to 2:00pm
Location: Grounds of the Sophienburg Museum and Archives, 401 W Coll St, New Braunfels, TX 78130-5618

The event is a FREE museum day and includes entertainment, local food, crafts, activities and fresh exhibits. The Comal County Genealogy Society will also be on hand to answer questions about genealogy.

Field Trip: July 26, 2024 (New Date)

The Comal County Genealogy Society will be taking a field trip to see the Comal County Courthouse and the Comal County Clerk’s Office. The address of the Courthouse is 100 N Seguin Ave, New Braunfels, TX, 78130.

The Courthouse tour begins at 10:00am in the 2d floor courtroom. This is accessible by stairs or elevator.
Then at 11:00am, we will go next door and get a tour of the Comal County Clerk’s Office.

Afterwards, the group will decide on a place to have lunch.

Field Trip: June 1, 2024 (New Date)

The Comal County Genealogy Society will be taking a field trip to see the Headwaters at the Comal. This will be a guided tour from 9:00am to 10:00am on Saturday, June 1. Headwaters is located at 333 E Klingemann St, near downtown New Braunfels.

The Comal River is the heart and soul of New Braunfels. They are rejuvenating 16 acres at the headwaters of the Comal River where people can learn, have fun, and experience history and nature. They’re strengthening the relationship between the community and nature by showcasing the significance of the Comal Springs.
