CCGS member Wilfred Schlather has published his research on Civil War participants from Comal County. Over six hundred individuals are tabulated to chronicle the service of Comal County citizen soldiers during the war between the states. Actual soldier's records were used to document the service of each individual. Information on militia (home guard) units is also listed.
Abbreviated unit histories are supplied for the three major units from Comal County that went out of Texas to fight in this conflict. Militia units include the information of Heinemeyer's Infantry Company that was formed to assist in the defense of Texas for a six-month period.
Captain Gustave Hoffmann's Company B, 7th Regiment, Texas Cavalry was involved with the Arizona Brigade under General Sibley; they ventured into New Mexico and fought at Val Verde and Glorieta Pass. Later this unit was involved in many battles from Galveston throughout Louisiana.
Captain Theodore Podewils's Company F, 36th Regiment, Texas Cavalry saw duty along the south Texas coast initially. When the invasion of Texas became eminent, this unit moved into and fought in many places in Louisiana.
Captain Julius Bose enrolled an infantry company from Comal County and also served initially in defense of southern Texas. This unit, Company K, 3rd Regiment Texas Infantry, also marched to Shreveport, Louisiana to assist in the defense of Texas. Once in Louisiana, they were attached to Walker's Texas Division and participated in the Camden Expedition into Arkansas. The only battle this unit participated in was at Jenkin's Ferry in Arkansas.
Some Comal County Union soldiers are included also; especially if they served in the 1st or 2nd Regiment Texas Cavalry (Union).
