Group Support
No, I’m not in therapy although my husband has been threatening intervention. I’m talking about all the good stuff you’ll find in the genealogy-related groups at Diigo . A portion of the main page of the Genealogy Research Resources Group at Diigo. The Group feature offers Diigo users with common interests a place to collect bookmarks supporting those interests, share notes, meet others with the same interests and generate all kinds of collaboration. It costs nothing to use Diigo or join groups. While there is no monetary cost, the value of a group is a direct result of ...

Going Mobile: Smart Phones
I’m not a big cell phone user. I have a pay-as-you-go phone that costs less than $8 a month to keep the service up and provide x-amount of call/sms/email time. Right now my balance is close to $250 which tells you that the chances of you finding me holding up a checkout line while I chat on the phone are slim to none. Having said that, the iPhone has me drooling. It’s small enough to fit into a pocket or pocketbook but has a screen that I can actually read and a touchscreen keyboard. It includes a camera and GPS system and also has wi-fi capability. So far, it doesn’t ...

DIY Books
I stumbled on this article the other day and found it quite intriguing. I have never planned a trip that could be supported by just one guidebook and then there’s the issue of my tastes (particularly in restaurants) not anywhere near those of most travel guide writers. Technorati Founder Dave Sifry Officially Launches OffBeatGuides.com: DIY Guidebooks On the Go The site allows you to enter your name, travel plans, and hotel. The system then pulls information from various sites including data from Accuweather and notes and articles by professional travel writers along with Creative ...

Voice and Video Chat from Gmail
Google has begun the rollout of video and voice chatting directly from your Gmail account. You’ll need a plugin (available for all major browsers), a webcam and a microphone, but you can connect to any other Gmail user right from your browser. If your Gmail account isn’t updated yet, don’t worry. It won’t be long. Mac users don’t have to wait. GTalk is one of the account options available in iChat and you can even share desktops with other GTalk users. All you need to use GTalk is a Gmail account. Think of the possibilities for helping friends and family and ...

Books Online
Like many genea-addicts, I love books. All kinds of books - from good to trashy fiction, history, howto, reference and photos - are a delight. I also love technology. So, when these two passions combine, I’m a very happy girl. For example, there’s nothing like a good story on an audiobook to make a long trip pass quickly. And, I’ve always got at least one e-book on my iPod to help make a waiting room more bearable. I work in the information management field. Over the years, we have spent massive amounts of money to provide not only our people, but also our users, with ...

Including Books and Pubs in Diigo
I’m a big fan of WorldCat . Not only is it a great way to find books and articles, but it also tells me which libraries in my area have copies of the publications I need. My problem is organization. I’ve got links for a specific project organized in Diigo but what about when I want to include references to books or articles with the links collection? No problem! It’s easy to link to specific WorldCat records and save those bookmarks in Diigo. Here’s how. . . In WorldCat, perform a search looking for the keywords, authors or titles you want to find. From the search ...

YouTube Offers Deep Linking

YouTube Offers Deep Linking
Here’s the scoop: It’s not a big new feature but it’s certainly one that will come in handy: YouTube will now allow you to send users to a specific point in a video by appending a short tag to the end of a video’s URL. To specify a point, append a tag to the end of your video link with the following syntax: “#t=1m45s” (you can change the numbers before the ‘m’ and ’s’ to edit the minutes and seconds, respectively. Here’s a sample link that will take you to a point in the middle of one of my favorite Ray Charles songs - ...

PDFPen Update

PDFPen Update
Joe Turner at MacApper has written an informative review of PDFPen’s latest update at PDFPen: Turning Your PDFs In To Paper . Here’s a taste: Think about a piece of paper with text on it. You can draw on it, annotate it and white out text. This is exactly what PDFPen lets you do to PDFs. It turns a PDF into a piece of paper. However, that’s not all it does. It has many other great features; one of which is OCR. OCR (optical character recognition) is a technology used to read text. When you scan a piece of paper onto your computer, even if you scan to a PDF, it is really ...

I just received notice today that MacSpeech has updated its Dictate speech-recognition software. Version 1.2 includes several interesting features such as spelling mode which allows you to spell a word letter-by-letter. With the new phrase training feature, you can train the software to recognize words and phrases you frequently use. A new move command increases your ability to verbally edit your documents. The new update is free of charge and can be easily installed by opening your MacSpeech Dictate and checking for updates.

OpenID Primer
I’ll bet you have user accounts at several online services and that you might add an occasional comment to a blog here or there. Each of these require a username and password to access the service/platform. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was one single sign-on account that would give you access to all your favorite sites? You’re in luck! A new technology called OpenID does just that. OpenID is a free technology which provides users a way to maintain one ID to log in to a growing number of online sites and services. This primer introduces you to the basics you’ll ...
