The Paupers Burial Ground South of Stinson Field in San Antonio

The following excerpt is from an extensive and very interesting article about an abandoned paupers’ cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. The article itself is in answer to a question in Paula Allen’s column , found in the November 1, 2009 edition of mysanantonio.com. Back in the 1930s, there was a paupers burial ground just south of Stinson Field . My brother, Nicholas Ely Delgado Jr., who died at birth in 1933, is buried there. There are still some rusted markers lying in the tangled underbrush just south of the field property. I talked to the crew who were constructing a helipad ...

This message is being written in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas. This is the hotel attached to the Little Rock Convention Center, site of the 2009 conference of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, co-sponsored by the Arkansas Genealogical Society. It is now the morning of the third day of this four-day conference and I must say that it has been a successful event so far.

The first day of the conference consists of presentations aimed primarily to officers of genealogy societies, to professional genealogists, and to those who operate Family History ...

New Data at The Original Record
The following data has been posted at The Original Record over the last two weeks. 1675-1857 Rugby School Register This edition was published in 1933: the volume covering 1675 to 1857 contains 6480 entries, based on the original school admission registers, but elaborated with general biographical information wherever the editor was able to do so. The entries for the 17th and early 18th centuries are much less detailed than those for later years. The arrangement of the fullest entries was to give the boy’s full name (surname first, in bold); whether eldest, second, &c., son; ...

Genealogists in the San Antonio area know Matt DeWaelsche as an archivist at the Texana/Genealogy Room at the Central San Antonio Public Library. However, there's another side to him they may not know about. By day, DeWaelsche helps genealogists. But at night, and on weekends too, he is known for something else: he plays he plays championship Scrabble.

DeWaelsche is not an average player. He plays at a level where chess clocks are slapped during play. When he scans a board, he sees every word as an anagram, and memorized word stems light up like neon signs.

DeWaelsche will ...

NFS's Helper Feature

Jim Greene, former New FamilySearch (NFS) product manager, recently explained what the Helper function is and why it is present in New FamilySearch.

The helper function was designed to allow all members to participate in new FamilySearch, and not just those who have computers, access to the Internet, or who love technology. There are many many members throughout the world who feel intimidated by the computer, or who have physical constraints that do not allow them to see a computer screen or work with a keyboard. Many others simply cannot ever afford to own a computer or pay ...

FamilySearch Developers Conference kickoff address
First, some random thoughts. At the start of the keynote I was concerned that I"d not seen ANYONE from Ancestry.com. But fifteen minutes in, I saw someone arrive. At lunch I saw a couple more. Their numbers were down from a dozen or so last year. Of course, I was one of those and this year I was with FamilySearch. Actually, I paid my own way last year and Ancestry.com gave me time off to attend. The slides on the CD are sure different than what some presenters showed. It"s amazing how much things can change between the CD deadline and the conference. Some presenters announced decisions made ...

New Online Digital Newspapers at NewspaperARCHIVE - 1
As you folks know, I’m a big fan of digital documents, books, and periodicals online. This last week I finally bought a NewspaperARCHIVE.com subscription. I’ve already found numerous papers that have items about both my family, as well as Patty’s. NewsaperARCHIVE is currently posting newspapers from the 1960s - one of the more interesting periods in my own life - so I’ve been reliving the past while I’ve been compiling this post. The following papers have been posted at NewspaperARCHIVE in the last 6 days. Note that I missed one day in there, so if you see ...

Waisenhaus believed to be first orphanage
By Myra Lee Adams Goff Can you think of three words that would describe what was important to your mother’s generation? How about your grandmother’s? Go back one more generation and it’s easy because that generation of immigrant women spelled it out: “Küche, Kirche, und Kinder, or “kitchen, church and children”. Written accounts bear this out. We know a lot about women’s lives from Luise Ervendberg. One hundred sixty five years ago on March 21, 1845, the first settlers crossed the Guadalupe, making their way to their first encampment in ...
